HISTORY

Nathan Sommers Gibson Dillon was founded on Marvin Nathan’s unwavering and uncompromising commitment to advocating for his clients, his ability to clearly and effectively impart his knowledge and experience to his clients, the belief that practicing law is a noble calling and the understanding that a lawyer’s responsibility to his clients is an obligation that demands unparalleled focus. After 50 years, those principles remain the bedrock of Nathan Sommers Gibson Dillon.

As a law student, Marvin Nathan heard a speech delivered by the United States Solicitor General on the Civil Rights Movement and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. That speech inspired Marvin, immediately following law school, to pursue a position as a trial lawyer in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice where he investigated and prosecuted several significant cases enforcing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

After two years of practicing law with the Department of Justice, Marvin returned home to Houston and in 1970 founded a law firm built on his indefatigable work ethic and unqualified commitment to his clients. Marvin attracted like-minded attorneys to the law firm, seeking attorneys who possessed a high level of integrity and commitment both to the law and to working tirelessly on behalf of their clients and the community.

In 1976, Ron Sommers joined the law firm. Ron built and maintains one of the region’s premier bankruptcy practices. Ron’s commitment to charitable causes and the arts has bolstered the firm’s commitment to the community.

In 1992, Ann Jacobs joined the law firm. Ann’s long standing banking practice shaped the banking practice area into a cornerstone of the firm.

Each lawyer in the firm respects the core principles of the firm and has adopted them as his or her own. Marvin Nathan’s vision and theory for practicing law is an integral part of Nathan Sommers Gibson Dillon’s culture and identity. Each lawyer in the firm, from the most senior shareholder to the most junior associate strives to build on our commitment to providing to our clients experienced legal guidance, representation and precise legal counsel.

While we look back proudly at five decades of our clients’ accomplishments, we never stop looking ahead. We work to make sure we can see around the next corner and lead our clients down the next path that will provide to them strong, honest representation, accessibility to our attorneys and a genuine commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for our clients.
